The Town of Fence is a very small town located in the Northwoods of Wisconsin in Florence County. In the 2017 Census, the town reported a total of 190 residents.
Fence came to be in 1921 and was picked over other suggested town names such as Podunk and Big Popple Settlement because it was easier to remember.
To the west of Fence is the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. This forest covers more than 1.5 million acres and provides many different uses to residents of the state, including forestry, outdoor activities, wildlife habitats, and more. The forest stretches from the boarder of the Upper Peninsula down to near the Menominee Reservation.
